XPS

XPS (extruded polystyrene) is commonly used in the Structural Insulated Panel Systems (SIPS) market. A unique method enables it to be continually extruded and foamed. The internal closed-cell foaming is continuous and uniform, generating a honeycomb structure, and the hard film generated on the surface is even and flat.

Common technologies used and why XPS is suitable for most projects.

  1. Thermal insulation: PU -0.022W/M2.K < XPS 0.029W/M2.K < EPS 0.042W/M2.K
  2. Price: EPS < XPS < PU.
  3. Temperature resistance: EPS 70℃ < XPS 95℃ < PU 120℃。
  4. Compressive strength: EPS 69 MPA < PU 150Mpa < XPS 200Mpa.
  5. Bonding strength: EPS < XPS < PU
  6. XPS, EPS and PU all are flame retardant materials.

With the information above, we see that EPS has the best pricing, but its performance is worse to XPS and PU in every way. EPX is appropriate for projects with low energy-saving performance requirements and low wind loads.

Because PU has the highest price and almost perfect performance in all areas, it is commonly utilized in high energy-saving projects.

XPS is the most popular material used in SIPS because it offers the best cost performance, superior thermal insulation, outstanding water and moisture resistance, and excellent compression performance, as well as being easy to install.
